Hi, I'm a new user running 1.7.3 and, encouraged by successfully creating
an rgd file for my Yamaha Motif XS, I thought I would try to incorporate
some percussion maps.
I loaded 'XG Rhythm Kits and Mappings' and compared it with the XML in
the file. With Program 25 (Electro Kit) selected and the Percussion
Matrix Editor open, I see that the key names do not match the contents
of the file. Eg key #79 is Scratch Pull in the XML, but appears as Open
Cuica in the editor. Also, the maps in the file cover more of the key-
board than shown in the editor.
It's quite possible that I'm completely misunderstanding something, in
which case enlightenment will be much appreciated. Or perhaps it's just
a problem with the rgd file I chose to look at. Is there one which is
known to have working percussion maps? Is there a tutorial somewhere?
Is there a txt2rgd.py for percussion maps?
I'll happily contribute the Motif XS .rgd (after a bit more testing)
if there isn't already one queued for the next release.
Thanks for a brilliant program.

More likely it's just buggy. This is a fairly recent feature, and it hasn't
been tested properly. I haven't sat down to figure out what's wrong with my
Roland-SC-33.rgd file and why its percussion map never seems to work
properly. While working on the bank editor in Thorn I saw some strange
buttons and tracked them down to strange buttons in 1.7.3, and then I had to
actually spend some time surfing around in the source code to figure out what
on earth the buttons were for. Key mappings, it turned out. Oh!
That gives you some idea of how well-tested the new feature is, and that's why
I think it's probably just broken. The one file I know to work is the
standard default autoload that ships with Rosegarden. The keyboard map
for "General MIDI Device" *should* work properly.
It's probably more than two years old, but it just hasn't made it onto the
list of things I tested and sorted the bugs out of. We haven't had many or
any bugs filed against it. The whole thing seems to have gone down as a sort
of forgotten footnote for the most part.
This will be getting some attention when we get to repairing the
catastrophically broken bank editor, but don't look for anything to wind up
in end user hands for some months yet.
In the meantime, it might or might not be helpful to quantify and isolate
exactly what's going wrong how and why in 1.7.3.
