i sortof fixed my own problem. if i convert my sample collection to 48Khz, they play just fine when i import them into a project. HOWEVER... they still don't play with the preview button in the audio file manager window. also, i still haven't figured out how to get the audio to work if i'm not root. it say's jackd not started, but ps -A shows jackd. no problems as root. what's up with that?
and... is there a way to get around converting my sample collection to 48Khz? like in logic, the samples used to play back at 48Khz and just be a little too fast, with is fine because most of them are percussive and not pitched. thanx all.

They don't play here either. Now that you mention it, the audio previews
haven't worked in ages. Just something that slipped through the pre-release
cracks I guess.
