As I read your message, even starting QSynth didn't cause magic to happen, because your existing default studio was targeting TiMidity, which was broken, and not making use of QSynth when you ran it. Making this change, starting QSynth should get magic to happen. But you still have to start QSynth somehow. Or try using the Fluidsynth-DSSI plugin perhaps.
