Just to close this out, I did finally get something that works. Don't know whether I should be embarrassed by it, but here it is in case it helps anyone else: All software (no microphones or MIDI keyboards) and using the mighty onboard Intel HDA. Programs run: qjackctl, qsynth, rosegarden, ecasound (called with flags "-c -a:1,2 -i jack_auto -a:1 -o jack_auto -a:2 -o mymusicfile.wav") Make sure rosegarden uses JACK transport. Type "engine-launch" in ecasound. Open JACK connections window and disconnect anything attached to "system->capture" or "ecasound". Connect all the qsynth engines out to ecasound in. (I failed to write it down, but I think there may be one more connection to break. If the sound is louder and uglier than it should be, revisit the JACK connections window.) Type "t" in ecasound. The music should start playing and be recorded to "mymusicfile.wav". The end.
