Well, the first thing I'd say (as a disclaimer) is that our record on making complex dialogs that are intuitive and simple to use is not very good (see: Bank Editor, Device Manager etc). My feeling is that it's probably nice to have a very simple selection dialog with an option to open the complex editor and manager. Your current dialog is arguably more sophisticated than a very simple selection dialog would be, in my mind, because it allows the fretboard to be edited even if it doesn't have any mechanism for saving and managing the results. If a simpler dialog than that -- that is, only one that offers you a selection from the known existing fretboards, displays the resulting fretboard, and does nothing else besides insert it -- would be too basic to be useful, then it may be better to have a single combined editor/selection dialog instead.
