Wow. After reading these accounts, I have given up on self-compiling on such old hardware, but I was able to do some wimpy real-time editing with the 10.x release included in Debian Squeeze. As long as I stick to one voice only, I can hear at the same time I edit. Thanks for the feedback.

I installed on an Asus eepc with about 2gb ram and it limps
miserably and freezes up, I took it off. It flies on my
Asus g73 with 8gb as well as on anything higher *BUT* I have
seen it throw fits about being "out of resources" even on
a core-8 w. 16gb.
