It might be simpler to over-ride the previous bar button, to go to the last measure if it is past the end of the composition.  That way, you have the best of both worlds.

Dear Will,

I like to keep segments tidy on the measures as well, but I can see the idea of cleaning up the end of a segment.  I typically am pretty slow on pressing the stop button when recording, so I enjoy the cleanup.  But a break on a beat or measure would be nice.

Thanks for the views from you and everyone in this thread so far -- it
would be nice to get as much feedback from users as possible about how
this sort of detail could work most pleasingly, so readers, please
keep it coming. My own inclination is that it would probably make
sense to cut off a recorded segment at the next bar line after the end
of its last event (if any).

People who do audio may have a very different opinion about all of that though.

Recorded audio segments are generally handled separately, so I think
any change here wouldn't affect audio recording.
