I downloaded and burned the Debian installation CD
image from
http://cdimage.debian.org/cdimage/daily-builds/daily/arch-latest/i386/iso-cd/debian-testing-i386-businesscard.iso.
I booted my MacBook Pro with it in the drive and
selected the "Boot Linux from CD" option. rEFIt
displayed the following:

rEFIt - Booting Legacy OS

Starting legacy loader
Error: Not Found while loading legacy loader

Please make sure you have the Firmware update installed, it is required for
    booting _any_ legacy operating system.

I don't think I'd upgraded the firmware when I tried it. If
I have the same problem in the future, I'll reopen this
report or submit a new one.
