Hi, folks … I got here via google (looking for a web-based reference system).

I'm doing a feasability evaluation for someone who has about 4000 scientific papers, currently held as flat html files, growing at maybe 200/year.

This kinda/sorta works … but has very  limited search capabilities. (Although he has keywords/categories marked off "KW=qwerty" so it is google-able.)

So I'm doing a feasibility study on moving to a "better" system.

I tried to get into the sandbox - http://demo.refbase.net/ but it refused all passwords (user@refbase.net / user).
http://beta.refbase.net/ let me in … but it's in French

I'm an expert programmer in C/C++ skilled in  php/javascript/html/css/win/unix/linux moderate in mysql/unix-linux admin

What are my options for going ahead with a short trial?

    a) Sandbox - I could use that for self-training, but I can't show the results
    b) Shared Database - I could have sworn I saw that as an option but now I can't find it!
    c) Install on a shared server - I have accounts on 1and1 and dreamhost - both have very short time-slices, but should be OK for a 4K-entry database

    Once I have a prototype/demo system running I'd hand-enter a few papers.

If that works, then I'd write some code to convert his flat HTML file into some convenient format
    http://www.refbase.net/index.php/Importing_records
perl and php both have DOM loaders and traversers, so that's well within my skill set.

If that works cleanly enough, then he might even want to run his existing system side-by-side for a while.

A simple iframe would work for incorporating this into his web site.

(Hmmm .. I don't see a preview option. I hope my formatting is OK!)

    Thanks,  Alan

  • I tried to get into the sandbox - http://demo.refbase.net/ but it refused all passwords (user@refbase.net / user).

    Hopefully, Matthias will fix this.

http://beta.refbase.net/ let me in … but it's in French

Locale is a per-user setting.  The other accounts are in English & I've reset the user account to English as well.  You can do this for yourself by clicking "options" (top right; middle choice takes you to http://beta.refbase.net/user_receipt.php?userID=1) and editing the appropriate display option setting (right hand side).

    b) Shared Database - I could have sworn I saw that as an option but now I can't find it!

    c) Install on a shared server - I have accounts on 1and1 and dreamhost - both have very short time-slices, but should be OK for a 4K-entry database

This would be your best option to demonstrate the database with the full library.  Installation should be straight forward.  If you run into issues, you can try the VMWare or MoWeS versions.  See http://www.refbase.net/index.php?title=Installing_refbase&redirect=no#Alternative_installation_methods

Thanks!  I'll try the sandbox first.

OK … I got in and did a few tests !!!  (As admin and user).

I know I should read the FINE manual …  but mayhaps someone could tell me quickly if it's possible to:

    a) have users self-register. (I could only see admin:add user)
    b) make a custom-designed search form : eg like the simple search, but WITH keywords
    c) customize the list view?  Hmmm … does it change with the search fields? That might be enough.

Self-answered … tracks with the search fields. That's fine.

I just customize MY version of search.php ?

I see there's a REGISTER on the login panel for http://www.refbase.org/

I guess I've answered all my initial questions … thanks for your help!

  • Hi Alan,

    b) make a custom-designed search form : eg like the simple search, but WITH keywords

While you could, of course, edit files 'simple_search.php' and 'search.php' to suit your needs, it may be worth considering the "Quick Search" form (at the top right of every refbase page) instead. By default, the Quick Search form lets you search the 'keywords' field, and the searched fields are displayed automatically in List View. The form can also be customized: Search for "main fields" in file 'initialize/ini.inc.php' to see the variables that can be used to modify the fields available for the Quick Search form.

    With regard to this:

A simple iframe would work for incorporating this into his web site.

Besides including the entire refbase site within an iFrame, refbase allows to include just parts of it (e.g. the search results list & options, or simply the formatted lists of citations). More info and linked examples are available here:

    Thanks ..

Just in case anyone  misunderstood my requirements :

    > I'm doing a feasability evaluation for someone who has about 4000 scientific papers, currently held as flat html files, growing at maybe 200/year.

That's an INDEX of 4000 papers. He has some available for download, but those would stay on his site, accessed through a link.

    Alan

  • And refbase is certainly able to handle that.  I have 11,000 papers indexed; 3,000 have pdfs (perhaps 600 of which are public).

Thanks again … it'll be a couple of weeks before I can do a test installation.  I'll continue here with dumb questions if I can't find them in the manual/forum.

  • Hi Alan,

I tried to get into the sandbox - http://demo.refbase.net/ but it refused all passwords (user@refbase.net / user).

FYI, I've reset the demo database at http://demo.refbase.net/ so you should be able to login again. Sorry for the trouble.
