I have an odd problem. I am using rdesktop 1.1.0-2 to connect from a
Linux Terminal Server to a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. The Linux
Terminal Server is running on RH8.0. The purpose is to provide client
access to MS Access 2000 for a proprietary POS application. The odd
problem is this: When running the Access application, if the user left
clicks in a blank field in the application, the field is selected, a
cursor appears in the field but it is flashing rapidly. This lasts for
30-90 seconds before the cursor stops flashing and becomes solid so that
the field can be typed in. While this is happening, nothing in Access
can be used. Clicking in other fields etc.. does nothing until the
flashing stops. It makes me think that it is trying to run some
selection process or something in the field when the field is selected.
1: This is not limited to the proprietary app, it occurs in the
Northwind demo data as well.
2: I can recreate this on all ltsp servers to W2K via rdesktop
3: Using the TAB key to move between fields does NOT result in the
4: Right clicking the mouse in the fields does not result in the
behavior. (This is the work around I have them using right now)
5: It does not matter how many times you click in a field. If you click
a different field and come back to the original field or any other
combination of clicking between fields. The result is the same. If you
left click, the cursor is stuck and flashes.
6: Connecting to the W2K Server from a Windows box using terminal
services client does not have this problem. Field selection works as it
Any and all ideas are appreciated.

I have updated the rdesktop software to 1.2.0 with the same results. I
have narrowed down the symptom to be the following:
If I bring up the northwind demo database and open the customer form,
there is a blank field called "Region". I am using this form for
If I move my mouse cursor over this field until the cursor turns from an
arrow into an "I" and then left click, the symptom is as described with
the flashing. If, however, I move the cursor to just under the main
field box where the drop shadow is for the box and left click when the
cursor is still an arrow, the box is selected and the cursor is in the
box with no flashing or delay. This appears to work on every field as a
"select all" of the field. In other words, if you select a box in this
manner that already has text in it, the text is selected and
It would appear from this test, that there is a problem of some kind
with the "insert" function and possibly the way it uses null when the
field is empty.
I also loaded Access 2002 from Office XP and tested using the same
form. This problem does not exist on Office XP. This would lead me to
believe that it might be an Access bug that was fixed between 2k and
I guess I now have a couple of workarounds but I would still like to
figure out the exact cause. I can upgrade the W2K server Office suite
to 2002, or I can train the customer on clicking in the shadow box area
of each field which would be a pain for them to do on every box.
Thanks for any further input.
