I think I am missing an important improvement here.
The bandwith of the current version of MS remote desktop for a session on a WIN200 consumes almost 10x LESS bandwith. Both absolute bytes and peak byte/second are much better. The current rdesktop compares to the old mstsc.exe with RDP4 but by no means can compete with the current technology.
The compression patch submitted earlier by Norma in combination with RDP 5 protocol should deliver significant improvement over the current version of rdesktop. Hence, this would be my suggestion.
