I suggest keep it simple..

Make Forum mingle nicely with rainbow as is today, using rainbow users and roles…

All users can participate in forums,…

You can always add a default role to the system

ForumModerator or whatever….

This can be one of the roles automatically installed in 1.6

I wouldn’t code modules specific for 1.6 unless you plan on the module taking several months to code J

1.6 is hopefully targeted for sometime this late summer. This is not guaranteed, but the Goal is to reach

1.6 / Zen2 ( depends on Jeremy )  together sometime before interntional conference.

1.6 is still in design phases, so don’t count on building code against it yet. But keep the feature list in mind when working on modules today.

Meaning…

Users are still rainbow users…. If the api on how to get the users changes later, its not such an issue ( especially for modules in cluded in core, because they would either have transparent calls, or whatever… or be corrected when the time comes. )

The key is to get YAF( or a full featured forum) integrated as a core module for 1.5 not 1.6.

Noone should be thinking about modules for 1.6 yet, it is too early in the game.

Just consider that any permissions systems of user system you spend too much time on for “forum” specifically has a good changce of overlapping with something that might be in 1.6 so I wouldn’t recommend dedicating too much effort there.

As mentioned a few days ago, if when working on forum, you have a list of Roles/Users you neeed in 1.5 … feel free to do so, and add them to the list so Bill is aware to consider them in the 1.6 design.

As far as permissions are concerned for 1.6

User can belong to groups… but permissions can be assigned per group and per user on the item level.

Means,… you will be able to assign permissions to a specific message if you want. This will come for free with the 1.6 framework.

The only roles I can imagine maybe you need to integrate with 1.5 to smooth Forum integration “TODAY not TOMMOROW” is maybe the moderator concept.

Yannick is correct. I was actually forced to use an Iframe when I used YAF due the the problems installing the Rainbow version.
Yes I will begin by getting the Rainbow version to integrate easily with Rainbow. From there we can make suggestions on enhancements.

The current YAF rainbow implementation that can be downloaded from http://rainbow.yetanotherforum.net/ already shares profile information with Rainbow registration as far as I experienced.

After researching various options, I think that YAF would make the best starting point.  I will work on rewriting certain pieces in order to integrate it with Rainbow. The login for YAF will be tied directly to Rainbow's user/role management.  "IDEA?"->I would like the registration process for the portal to have a check box that says join forum which would give them a new role such as "ForumMember".  My goal is to remove the need to enter in user/registration information in over and over for each new module. Maybe the portal should be reconfigured to allow new modules to use single entry sign on. All modules could use the same user information. If additional information is needed then maybe the roles management piece could handle that.
Feedback appreciated.
