I have 2 labs with MAC's. One lab is running 10.3.9 and the other lab and server are running 10.4.5, will this cause any problems? --------------------------------- Talk is cheap. Use Yahoo! Messenger to make PC-to-Phone calls. Great rates starting at 1¢/min. |

I'm tracking down an odd problem on my Mac OS X system, that seems to recur each time I update my filesystem with the Radmind tools. It centers around a Bluetooth mouse, which I still see in my list of devices but which isn't otherwise recognized by the OS. In examining what may be happening, I noticed that the files /private/var/root/Library/Preferences/{blued,com.apple.bluetooth}.plist are changed from their defaults in my Mac OS X Tiger base loadset after I set up the mouse. The blued.plist file contains detailed information about the BT devices I've been using. The Bluetooth.plist file just lists "RecentDevices." Has anyone else done any management of systems with Bluetooth devices? Have you put either or both of these files in negative, and if so, has that improved matters? They seem to be good candidates for it, and I'm considering creating a negative transcript for them. If so, I would also remove them from my base loadset by commenting them out in the transcript. Hi We currently run our radmind server on OSX 10.39 with clients on 10.39. Both server and clients run radmind 1.5. I want to start testing a new 10.4 image using 1.6 client. Will this work OK with 1.5 server or should I update the server to 1.6. If I need to update the server will my 1.5 clients still be OK? Terminal. The Assistant currently only allows the administrator to view, add or delete certificates on the client. It does not generate certificates yet. > Also, any doc available for this new feature? You just got it. :) |

Assigning a SSL certificate per machine is the next step I need to make in my setup. I've read the different documents on the web on how to do this with Radmind but find them rather lacking, or black-box "follow step 1-9, dont bother to understand the process" procedures. I assume that SSL certificate creation and management must be part of all basic unix training, which explains why it's not in my repertoire. So my question is, does the client certificate feature of radmind assistant 1 allow to manage the whole process, or do you still have to go into the terminal on each machine to generate their certificate? Is this my lifesaver, or just a mirage. Also, any doc available for this new feature? Thanks Manuel man...@pr... |

Hello, I was wondering, has anyone created an iLife 06 loadset? I am having a hard time creating one. Everytime I try to create the loadset, it inadvertently hangs on me (especially at the time when I try to include iTunes). The menulet (or whatever it's > called) does not show up. That's not quite how it works. When you enable the Update Monitor, a few things happen depending on your system version. On 10.4, edu.umich.rumd.plist is installed in /Library/LaunchDaemons and launchctl starts rumd. This is the utility that runs ktcheck -n every couple hours. On 10.3, the RadmindUpdateMonitor StartupItem is created in /Library/StartupItems and its script is run, starting rumd. On both systems, the RadmindUpdateMonitor.app in the Assistant's bundle is launched and added to the current user's Login Items (stored in ~/Library/Preferences/loginwindow.plist). A small representation of the Radmind icon should appear in the menu bar. The RadmindUpdateMonitor.app is not moved from the Assistant's application bundle. > Is it me or should I file a bug report. > > Probably me. Not necessarily. What's in the console log when you try to enable it? What's in the system log? If you find anything suggesting a bug, file a report. andrew |

You know sometimes it is better to keep quiet and be thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it. Friends and neighbours, this is one of those times... I started redoing my testing after seeing the benchmarks from David. I became suspicious when all my numbers started coming out the same. My faulty assumption was that all that was needed was the "-Z 9" directive on the server process and a client new enough to recognise it. So my comparisons really only reflected the performance difference between the older client I was using and the newer version WITHOUT COMPRESSION. When I actually added the "-Z 9" directive to the client script and started altering the server value I got results much more in line with David's. Performance was a complete dog with the setting at 9. With the setting at 1 the first few files were slow and then there was an error at about 10% on one of the Clipart files (test was delete MS Office 2004) which was repeatable. With no "-Z" argument on the server the streaming was very fast (about 14 seconds for all of MS Office 2004). Oh, and compression does peg the CPU and DOESN'T use the second CPU so a dual processor is not much help. Sorry to mislead you all. BTW, this is all with 1.6.0rc4 so may not be completely representative of 1.6.0 release version... Anyway, props to the Radmind team for making such a substantial improvement to the (uncompressed) throughput between 1.5.1 and 1.6.0rc4 that I thought it was due to compression. I'm not sure if this belongs on the bug track or here: Just tried to implement an overload for the new RA and two things: 1) can't reboot ( i suppose this is because the code got changed under it) 2) the RadmindUpdateChecker (not what it's called) appears to not get installed properly. The file is in the RA and the StartupItems folder has the folder but the actual app is not in the startup, nor is there a symbolic link or alias. The menulet (or whatever it's called) does not show up. Is it me or should I file a bug report. Probably me. ;-\ -- Christopher D. Yes, I'll file a bug with this, but the list is more interactive. With the 1.0 version of the assistant on 10.3.9 I get an error about undefined symbols from rmauthexec. I got this same error with the last rc of the assistant as well, but not with the last released version on the same Mac. <snip> root# ktcheck -csha1 -i -w2 -hdhcp172-21s10n96.0998.lowes.com dyld: /Applications/Radmind/Radmind Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/rmauthexec Undefined symbols: /Applications/Radmind/Radmind Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/rmauthexec undefined reference to _syslog$LDBL128 expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib root# cd / root# fsdiff -A -% -o/tmp/.radassist-HHAofe/radassist-apply-385.T / dyld: /Applications/Radmind/Radmind Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/rmauthexec Undefined symbols: /Applications/Radmind/Radmind Assistant.app/Contents/Resources/rmauthexec undefined reference to _syslog$LDBL128 expected to be defined in /usr/lib/libSystem.B.dylib </snip> Ideas? Following Sam Agnew's comments about compression being beneficial on his fast network with a dual 2.0 G5 processor server, I decided to test compression performance again using the fastest server I could obtain. Unfortunately, the best was my own office computer - single 2.0 GHz G5. I didn't have a dual or quad available. The results are interesting, though. The faster processor helped. With no compression, runs were 29% faster compared to my 1.0 GHz G4 Xserve, but with compression, I saw 56 % to 59 % improvements. Running with compression at -Z 1, it only took 12 second longer than running without. It would seem that there is a break-even point that probably needs multiple processors to be reached, at this time. The updated report is here: http://at.unh.edu/acs/public/radmind_compression_performance.html An idea for developers to ponder: pre-compress and store. You would lose the flexibility, but if you stored compressed files on the server, you don't need the on-demand, repeated CPU resources. I can also see a lot of reasons that's a bad or at least complicated idea. -David J. Blezard Academic Computing Systems University of New Hampshire On Mar 24, 2006, at 10:32 AM, David J. You then want to REMOVE the nidb from your base transcript - I think this is where the problem is. If you two transcripts with nidb files in them then you will have problems. This means that if you want to have different users in your nidb for different configurations of machine, you want to make an overload of the entire nidb for each configuration - if you try and do it with overloads, stuff like you described will tend to happen (or in my experience, the machine will stop booting until you manually delete the db and start again). HTH. This method has worked for me since 10.2. -geoff > > netinfo.T > =-=-= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Clean 0644 0 0 > 1143516925 4 cljV07/miSP0PFVzzM/1nqAT8VA= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Config 0644 0 0 > 1143516925 4 R54E89EtEStcBMnuZ+Sx5uIB6k4= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.1088 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 3264 N+z/dvqgd91s5DuR+iPfkNIL0WA= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.128 0644 0 0 > 1143508978 4352 evLeJRN850lpY2rjUZYSLdFDe5Y= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.160 0644 0 0 > 1143508978 2880 IJyBW++VaXkKemfbtS3eoVeQtjw= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.192 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 576 ZXL0WBvyCQeilsnWprJzd3iJtQk= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.224 0644 0 0 > 1143508978 1344 e1gdeICkEFV8OYXIsKhpOtOvnyE= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.256 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 1536 JSDuGdrUQH7hcIFGiU/kTu1Q438= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.288 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 5472 suCT9h8mH+2P5yssKyTPd/qoKU4= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.352 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 2112 yjBJP3GEVnKs9w+Sm9G+BquSpw4= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.416 0644 0 0 > 1143508978 1248 fDbBh02NLOvtfh2Oq2CPiFvukM4= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.768 0600 0 0 > 1143508978 1536 QG7XB0CeHArPZidvwxzW01hybkY= > f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.96 0644 0 0 > 1143508978 1056 gGtEyio0B8KOYQVauRRPLb56zzU= > =-=-= > > shadow.T > =-=-= > f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- > B07B-8574F91762D1 0600 0 0 1143508978 1240 > Wzttuq74RlgfCsIYHcy/Nbge7dU= > =-=-= > > And a shadowwithstatefiles.T > =-=-= > f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- > B07B-8574F91762D1 0600 0 0 1143508978 1240 > Wzttuq74RlgfCsIYHcy/Nbge7dU= > f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- > B07B-8574F91762D1.state 0600 0 0 1143509122 423 > b2WDyeBXxMoybrAB54oCrVFkmA0= > f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/DE70F224-08A1-4643-8686- > CBC06A571966.state 0600 0 0 1143517036 423 > yhNuqSVivpQLzeSJLy/6pDwmEQ0= > =-=-= > > 6. Hiya, Thanks very much for the advice so far Sam. However, I'm sorry to say that I'm still having problems. :-\ Here's what I've done: 1. Do network image install, which on finish reboots, and then automatically runs a radmind updaate. The command file for the machine is as bare as I can make it so that I can reduce the chances that something else is causing the problems - a very minimal 10.4 base transcript and a negative transcript. The base transcript contains the following local.nidb entries; =-=-= d /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb 0700 0 0 f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Clean 0644 0 0 1119838449 4 EikPYD0Gw7nbiPM9GDKOjNrUkRY= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Config 0644 0 0 1119838449 4 R54E89EtEStcBMnuZ+Sx5uIB6k4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.1088 0600 0 0 1117942775 2176 KWdeFP18rcQwqwEE+BVvYyXlJsY= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.128 0644 0 0 1119491211 4352 evLeJRN850lpY2rjUZYSLdFDe5Y= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.160 0644 0 0 1119491418 2880 IJyBW++VaXkKemfbtS3eoVeQtjw= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.192 0600 0 0 1119491211 576 MW8Akl1rNf6S43BfeklJX+C/Xfs= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.224 0644 0 0 1119491418 1120 KPLhaJjpW7y0qfhhNhntpu6rTXI= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.256 0600 0 0 1117944830 1536 EtuN3JPC4zAbdrYyxDP3X0kagls= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.288 0600 0 0 1117944522 5472 7kLxjbnqNVnA9RuS0kz4j6YL/UE= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.320 0600 0 0 1117895522 4160 78DZtm3GICnKUSM4Z3VkflqI8jQ= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.352 0600 0 0 1117896816 2112 yjBJP3GEVnKs9w+Sm9G+BquSpw4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.384 0644 0 0 1117896816 8448 5xpzqIU37Chh3Q5t3V2BTUriSs8= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.416 0644 0 0 1111545397 832 WO9KBKA2/5SZWa3E/VKurZDsipY= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.768 0600 0 0 1119314234 768 IRhMN0ajyXILKANqNXQEAVoyfZQ= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.96 0644 0 0 1119491418 1056 0DZrFgInyiV/gUSaWxFMqDrEWNA= =-=-= The negative has a commented out reference to the netinfo folder =-=-= ###d /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb 0700 0 0 =-=-= 2. At this point, I have my two local admin users, 'admin' and 'radmind' setup and working fine. Just to be as thorough as possible, I ran a radmind update again, and let it reboot. 3. I login as admin, and create a guest account 'guestlogin' via System Preferences -> Accounts, and then reboot the machine. 4. I login as guest to make sure it's working, and it does. I logout and reboot again. (I know all this rebooting shouldn't be necessary but I really want to make sure this time) 5. Login as admin account and from a terminal, run 'sudo /usr/local/ bin/fsdiff -C -c sha1 / > /tmp/transcript.T'. I then edit that file into three transcripts: netinfo.T =-=-= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Clean 0644 0 0 1143516925 4 cljV07/miSP0PFVzzM/1nqAT8VA= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Config 0644 0 0 1143516925 4 R54E89EtEStcBMnuZ+Sx5uIB6k4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.1088 0600 0 0 1143508978 3264 N+z/dvqgd91s5DuR+iPfkNIL0WA= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.128 0644 0 0 1143508978 4352 evLeJRN850lpY2rjUZYSLdFDe5Y= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.160 0644 0 0 1143508978 2880 IJyBW++VaXkKemfbtS3eoVeQtjw= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.192 0600 0 0 1143508978 576 ZXL0WBvyCQeilsnWprJzd3iJtQk= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.224 0644 0 0 1143508978 1344 e1gdeICkEFV8OYXIsKhpOtOvnyE= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.256 0600 0 0 1143508978 1536 JSDuGdrUQH7hcIFGiU/kTu1Q438= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.288 0600 0 0 1143508978 5472 suCT9h8mH+2P5yssKyTPd/qoKU4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.352 0600 0 0 1143508978 2112 yjBJP3GEVnKs9w+Sm9G+BquSpw4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.416 0644 0 0 1143508978 1248 fDbBh02NLOvtfh2Oq2CPiFvukM4= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.768 0600 0 0 1143508978 1536 QG7XB0CeHArPZidvwxzW01hybkY= f /private/var/db/netinfo/local.nidb/Store.96 0644 0 0 1143508978 1056 gGtEyio0B8KOYQVauRRPLb56zzU= =-=-= shadow.T =-=-= f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- B07B-8574F91762D1 0600 0 0 1143508978 1240 Wzttuq74RlgfCsIYHcy/Nbge7dU= =-=-= And a shadowwithstatefiles.T =-=-= f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- B07B-8574F91762D1 0600 0 0 1143508978 1240 Wzttuq74RlgfCsIYHcy/Nbge7dU= f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/2AF821CC-33E5-45F5- B07B-8574F91762D1.state 0600 0 0 1143509122 423 b2WDyeBXxMoybrAB54oCrVFkmA0= f /private/var/db/shadow/hash/DE70F224-08A1-4643-8686- CBC06A571966.state 0600 0 0 1143517036 423 yhNuqSVivpQLzeSJLy/6pDwmEQ0= =-=-= 6. I verify and check in the transcripts on the server, then setup the machine's command file to have the base.T, the netinfo.T, the shadow.T and the negative.T 7. I then re-netinstall the machine, let it reboot, does the radmind update. 8. I am then able to login as admin still, but I am not longer able to use sudo, which makes it hard to use twitch. I'm unable to login as 'guestlogin' and the Netinfo application shows no sign of the 'guestlogin' user either. The netinfo app doesn't appear to have a groups tree either. When I try to click on the Accounts preference pane, I just get a blank window. 9. I then setup the machine's command file to have the base.T, the netinfo.T, the shadowwithstatefiles.T and the negative.T 10. Re-netinstall, let it reboot, does the radmind update. 11. Same problem again (as per step 8). The only scripting I have that affects the netinfo db is some 'nicl' commands that setup the mounts for the machine. Nothing to use with users/groups... The University of Michigan's Research Systems Unix Group is pleased to announce the 1.0 release of the Radmind Assistant. This release adds support for the new compression features in the radmind tools, a background update monitor, client certificate management, pre- and post-apple script management, wildcard searches in the Transcript Editor, and numerous bug fixes. Radmind Assistant 1.0 includes an installer for the 1.6.0 release of the Radmind tools. This release is made available as a Universal Binary, which requires Mac OS X 10.3.9 or above. You may download Radmind Assistant 1.0 here: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/radmind/RadmindAssistant-1.0.0.dmg? download (rmd160: bad747a106caa45316cc05b4e0a46b93d8f297a4) (sha1: c731b2c61df74d9b18a98fda1afb7a01854d6e48) A gzipped source tarball is also available: http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/radmind/radmind-assistant-1.0.0- src.tgz?download (rmd160: 14ed958e492eda26695a9c1d4aed16e0e4f72a88) (sha1: c887c575ca91edc8538b8a00650c697ac1da63d0) Release notes and changelog follow. -- Notes: The 1.0 release adds the Radmind Update Monitor, a small application that appears in the logged-in user's menu bar.
