Yep that would work, only point there would be having to write an i2c driver for the 86393. The thing we don't know is which GPIO bits are used for what signals on the circuit since they're "programmable". That may take some sniffing the control signals under the windows driver. Unfortunately I can't get windows reloaded on my viao at the moment as I don't have a Sony cdrom drive.
