No

Hi
Hi guys

yesterday i incidentally noticed that the qmidiarp sequencer only outputs MIDI note ON messages and no note OFF messages.
Iso outputting a 'normal' note OFF message it outputs another note ON but with a velocity of '0'
this is more of a 'mute' action than a real note OFF message

is this done intentionally ?

    Hi Thijs,

yes QMidiArp sends Note On zero velocity messages instead of Note Offs. This is quite common among MIDI software and hardware. MusE for instance uses the same way to switch off notes, as well as a hardware synthesizer keyboard I own.
    But,

this is more of a 'mute' action than a real note OFF message

This is not correct. Note ON zero velocity messages are to be treated exactly as Note OFF messages by the receiver, the Midi specification is quite clear on that.

So yes, it is done intentionally, althought there is no particular reason for it. But would there be a reason to change it?

  • no reason, just curious :-)

I just found (only now!) that LV2 MIDI specification apparently overrides the NOTE-OFF / NOTE-ON-VELOCITY-ZERO equivalence of the standard MIDI specification, and it states that a NOTE OFF is required. So I fixed qmidiarp regarding this in the JACK and LV2 backends. At least things are clear to me now
    Cheers
