PyGame can apparently render text to bitmaps quite nicely (so can wxPython, for that matter). I've never gone this route myself. GLUT has a very limited set of fonts available (see the OpenGLContext/tests directory for a quicky sample of using that). That's cross-platform, and generally available when PyOpenGL is. Until/unless we get one of the "proper" font-rendering libraries wrapped, those are probably your best bets.
