Hi all, I was curious whether anyone knows about issues with building on Windows XP, and deploying that application on Vista. I'm currently using py2exe successfully on XP, but don't have easy access to a Vista machine. I'd rather know of any issues ahead of time before I try to install the application for my customer. Searching around, I didn't find any notes on this setup. Does anyone know if there are any gotchas I should be thinking about? Thanks! Brian |

Between my tests and thousands of users, I haven't seen any issues. I stay away from Python 2.6.2, though, because of a Microsoft C runtime issue. I use Python 2.5 instead. Best regards, Andrew |

I think it has to do with this http://bugs.python.org/issue4566 Andrew |

Now I dev on Vista and deploy to Vista, XP, 7 (testing) and Win2K without any problems. One thing to keep in mind when moving from XP to Vista and Win7 is the MS UAC stuff. Very simplified, do not have anything writable in your program folder - check out the InnoSetup site (either FAQ or Knowledge base) for more details. If you go with Python 2.6.2 (I don't think 2.6.0/1 worked) make sure that you use e.g. the latest wxPython version and you have to make sure that you deploy the MS runtime dll's correctly (either using the MS installer for it or install them locally to your app folder - see the wiki here: http://wiki.wxpython.org/Deployment Werner |

I have not had problems building on XP and deploying on Vista, but the reverse has been problematic, unfortunately. When I built with the same code on Vista, the executable does run on Vista, but fails to run on XP. There were various DLL loading failures that I was not able to debug. Hi, The only issue I have with "built on the XP, deployed on the Vista" is that "Program Files (x86)\" subdirs on the Vista are read-only. So I tell the users to install elsewhere. Good luck, Enoch. There is no flag - but note that py2exe doesn't attempt to open the file until something is written to sys.stderr - so I generally just replace sys.stderr with something that is suitable for my app as the very first thing that happens.
