I'm sorry if this is on the site but I couldn't work it out: Does py2exe give me a single myprog.exe which will run on a windows PC without installing any files? TIA Simon :-) |

No Jim, I need to make a couple of simple admin programmes to help with bits and bobs when I use other PCs but I don't want to invade their HD I would rather burn 20 or 30 Mb of my 2 Gb thumb stick and have a program that just runs. eg Putty - great app eh? |

Simon, You shouldn't have a problem with that. go to my website and download inqvista v-1.7 check out how I did it. It sounds like it's the same thing you are trying to do. Usually, inqVista is installed and runs in a user made directory on the computers HD, but without making any changes to the other files on the HD. I haven't tried it on a stick, but It should work. Read my instructions for a Windows setup, you should be able to build and install your program the same way to run on a stick. jim-on-linux http://www.inqvista.com > > eg Putty - great app eh? > > ----------------------------------------------- >-------------------------- Using Tomcat but need > to do more? Simon Faulkner wrote: > Does py2exe give me a single myprog.exe which will run on a windows PC > without installing any files? py2exe built executables themselves don't copy/install any part of themselves onto a PC (unless, of course, the Python program you are building does that). If you want to go beyond that and get a minimum number of files then start with a setup.py that looks like this: from distutils.core import setup import py2exe setup( script_args=3D['py2exe', '--bundle=3D1'], console=3D['util1.py', 'util2.py'], zipfile=3DNone, ) Each program will be in one file (util1.exe, util2.exe) that executes directly without even copying itself to a temp directory. There will also be a file called w9xpopen.exe that is only needed if you are using popen and need to use your program on Windows 9x. Finally, if you are using Python 2.4 or 2.5 then there will also be msvcr71.dll (Python 2.3 uses an earlier version that you can expect to already be on any Windows PC). Some Python packages are incompatible with the bundle=3D1 option. You = can also try bundle=3D2, bundle=3D3, or removing the bundle and zipfile = options. Each of those options will add additional files, but will also cause more to be shared between programs and therefore the total size will be smaller. Jimmy |
