Standard Python 2.2 installation.
Download of latest Py2EXE binary installer.

Installer puts the py2exe package under site-packages
(no other option provided), with tools as a
sub-directory. This isn't found by distutils (which is
looking in distutils.command.py2exe). Moving the
package into lib/distutils/command avoids that problem,
but then the "tools" package is not found in a later
import. Moving tools into site-packages gets past
that, but then py2exe_util is not found at a still
later point.

I give up here 'cause I figure I'm messing things up
too much to hope that it's going to work :)

Mike, I don't know what you are doing. py2exe must be
installed somewhere on the path, and that's what the
    installer is doing.
It inserts itself with some kind of magic as a distutils
command, no other action is needed.

You should probably remove all the files from your previous
attempts and do a fresh install. It should work!
