All -- After a long period of time with no releases (and two or more promises of "OK, I'll release it", I have bundled the latest code in CVS into the newly released version 1.0. I believe that Markus Peter is responsible for most of the code in this release ($Markus++), although I think there were some patches or clues from other folks ($folks{$_}++ foreach @contributor). I have dubbed this the "Dithyramb" release (http://www.focusresearch.com/gregor/wow/2001-09-29.html). Here are some notes about what is new (you can find more in the CHANGES file on the web page noted below): * New 'if' builtin * New 'forfile' builtin: "forfile *.txt less $_" is equivalent to bash's "for i in #.txt; do less $i; done" * New redirection and piping syntax (incompatible with old sh- like syntax): "ls >[=FILEHANDLE]" * Backticks work * A strategy for finding and running Darwin/Mac OS X Appbunlde programs. * Support for && and || with simple commands * Themes * Major startup time reduction NOTE: You may need to modify your startup scripts / rc files with this version. Please see README.upgrade in the distribution for more information. You can find out more at The Perl Shell (psh) at: http://www.focusresearch.com/gregor/psh/ Please note that Windows functionality in this release has not seen much testing, so it may not work correctly in that environment. Please post experience reports to the mailing list. We are looking for folks interested in helping keep future releases working under Windows environments. If you are so inclined, then please so indicate. The next wave of changes being contemplated for psh will take things in a new direction. First, where the desire for shellish and perlish behaviors get in each other's way, we will be moving toward shellish behavior. This will very likely entail some modifications to the syntax required to advise the shell "here be perl". Second, we are considering some changes which will make psh more generic. So, while it will remain The Perl Shell (from an implemenatation perspective), it may become The Poly Shell (from a user's perspective). There is room for discussion on the psh-dev list for those with comments, concerns, ideas, queries, curses, etc. as we flesh out the details. Enjoy, -- Gregor perl -e 'srand(-2091643526); print chr rand 90 for (0..4)' |

Hello A pre-release version of psh is now available on SourceForge at http://sourceforge.net/projects/psh This is a beta-test release to support the development of psh and fixing remaining bugs by adding a wider range of testers till the official 0.010 release which will (as usual) be made available by Gregor when he thinks the time fits. Note that due to its pre-release nature, this package is only available at the above mentioned URL and not on the the psh homepage or from CPAN. Note that there are known bugs, especially in the completion area. These will be addressed for the 0.011 release as they require a major rewrite of the completion system. Nevertheless, I think this version is far superior and more bug-free than all psh releases before. The most important changes: Far less memory consumption, vastly improved startup time, many new builtins, parser rewrite to get rid of certain bugs, new redirection syntax, improved scripting, prompt and completion themes, new configuration options system. Please see the CHANGES file and the README.upgrade file in the package for more information. -- Markus Peter - SPiN AG wa...@sp... |

All -- In recognition of his past and continued contributions to the project, I recently offered Markus the role of co-maintainer of the Perl Shell. He accepted, and I have upgraded his permissions on SourceForge to give him co-maintainer status. This I view as making official what has clearly been the case for some time now. I hope you will join me in thanking Markus for his improvements to the Perl Shell and welcoming him to his expanded role. Markus will produce interim "pre" releases of the Perl Shell when he thinks the new code is ready for wider testing and I will continue to manage the rollout of "official" releases. All -- I wrote an article for the latest issue (#18) of The Perl Journal (http://www.itknowledge.com/tpj/) about the Perl Shell. The article is the same as the one that appeared earlier in the online publication EUP e-zine. There is another article in the same issue about Perlix, which used Tom Christiansen's Perl Power Tools for the shell utilities and the Perl Shell as the shell for a Linux kernel based system.
