Hi Rafael, Alan,
Guess what? I implemented unicode in the gcw driver last night. I
can see now what all of the excitement is about. Very neat! Alan, you
can add gcw to your list of unicode-enabled drivers in the documentation.
In gcw, I have made text handling the default if freetype is
available. I don't see any reason to stick with the Hershey fonts when
the freetype output is so pretty. Should we maybe do this for the other
drivers too? It would be nice if the default behaviour was
pretty-printing (when available), so as to make the best impression with
new users. Of course, it should always default to hershey when freetype
is not available.
Rafael, I have also heard that the GnomeCanvas is based on the
postscript model, but I haven't yet found any code that allows postscipt
printing. Another question we might ask is whether or not the code that
allows freetype in the gcw driver could be modified for use in the ps
driver. Perhaps somebody else has solved the ps-freetype problem?
BTW, why is my "Proposal for release schedule" in this thread on the
sourceforge mail archive? Is there a way to fix it or should I just
