I think not only Player/Stage but Gazebo can enter Google Summer of Code.

I started a GSoC section on the wiki:

Please contribute ideas there, but feel free to discuss them here (on
the devel list).  I stuck a deadline of 9 March on the wiki ideas
list.  That will give a couple of days to get the best ones refined
and posted somewhere less volatile for review by Google along with our
application to be a mentoring organization (this application is due 12
March).
