Hi,
The vector map interface is fairly limited with only simple line segments supported. I am proposing to replace this with support for for the Open Geospatial Consortium simple features
( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simple_Features) This will allow the representation of more complex geometries as single features allowing sensible grouping. Each feature could also be given an ID in parallel allowing extra information to be requested about it seperately. The OGC also sepcifies a standard binary structure to represent a feature (well know binary or WKB) as well as a text standard (well known text or WKT). These standards are used fairly widely in the open source GIS community with support in postgis (the geospatial extensions for postgres). My feeling is that there is very limited use of the vector functions of the map interface so we should be able to just change the interface without any issues.

The simple feature set described by OGC also maps fairly easily between other formats such as shapefiles and KML (google earth)

Any comments on the proposal?

Toby
