Was there ever a solution found to this?  I'm running into the same issue, and ./configure --disable-all doesn't solve it.  One thing I did notice was that the compile step that errors out uses a different -L path than the ones before:

-L/Users/<myShortName>/Desktop/player-1.6.5/client_libs/libplayerc
rather than
-L../../../client_libs/libplayerc

My mastery of automake isn't sufficient to track down why this happens, though.

progress if you just disable the tests from being built. This is not the
'best' solution but may be the quickest if you are not planning on using
the gps/joystick or truth proxies yourself.
