Because there's some rogue version of echo on OSX that doesn't recognize -n, even though /bin/echo does.
Tangential note/bug: I had to run autoreconf -f or libtool complained at link time. The tarball apparently isn't very compatible.

Thanks for this bug report.
Could you attach the output of config.log to this bug report?
Also: could you create a new bug report with the output of the original tarball with the errors reported by libtool?
Could you try the attached patch?
The configure script already tries many thing to find the correct version for echo and puts it in lt_ECHO.
I've also used the ECHO_N and SED variables, because they exist too
And here is the actual patch (which I had forgotten to attach), which has been applied to svn 1502 (0.12.4)
The previous patch broke my setup on Debian Stable. See svn 1507 for a fix (AC_SUBST(ECHO))
Revision 1577 contains a better version, which actually located the location of echo (similar to the proposed 'which'). Revision 1577 makes Pioneers build under Cygwin again
I'm closing this tracker before the release of 0.12.4, because it is hit by a spambot.
