AIM requires an email address so that they can contact you when they
change the license, to verify it isn't a dead account, so on. it has
nothing to do with actually using AIM or actually using MSN. in gaim,
look at tools->accounts. select to create a new account. there is a
drop down box there with a number of different account types.
if you create an aim account, you will only be able to add people
using the aim service. if you create a msn account, which would use a
msn email address, not an aim user name, you can only add msn using
friends. if you select to add a yahoo account, you add yahoo buddies
to it, again having nothing to do with a aim screenname.
each service in gaim is totally independent except that they use the
same ui, and that you can connect to them all from a single instance
of gaim. however, you would do that by signing on multiple separate
accounts from tools->accounts.
naturally if you added an msn buddy to an aim account you would not
see the person online. you need to create an msn account in gaim and
add the buddy to that.
