first of all, gaim-commits is for telling people when cvs has changed. it is
NOT for this kind of email. please send this kind of email to gaim-devel.

gaim supports some of the features of irc, aim, icq, yahoo, msn, gadu-gadu,and jabber.
we are working to increase support for all the protocols, to eventually match the capabilities
of the windows clients.
we support multiple connections: you can use one instance of gaim to sign on with as many of
the above protocols as you wish, and even to sign on them multiple times if you so desire.
we support tab-ed conversations, so that all conversations, and optionally all chats,
show up in the same window instead of cluttering up the screen with different windows.
and much more.

gaim currently requires that you have a unix computer with XWindows and GTK. work is
being done on porting it to Windows. in the unix world however, gaim is run on
as diverse a platform as MacOSX, linux, freebsd, and solaris. You need a couple
megabytes of hard drive space and less ram.

gaim is free as in beer and as in speach. we are under the GNU license, you can
find out more at http://www.gnu.org

there is no sale of gaim ever. you just download it and start using it.
support is via the faq in the documentation section of the home page, via
the open discussion forum and the bug, support, patch, and feature request trackers
on http://www.sf.net/projects/gaim and via irc chat room. All of the gaim staff, both
coders and support do so on a volunteer basis. gaim is provided as-is, while
we are known for helping people who ask fairly effectively, there is no
guarantee that we will solve a given issue.

gaim is used by geeks of all types.
hope this helps answer your PARTICULARLY CLUELESS questions :-)

-This email is made of 100% recycled electrons.

If it's Microsoft...delete it.
-There are three ways to get something done:
(1) Do it yourself.
(2) Hire someone to do it for you.
(3) Forbid your kids to do it.
