Trillian did something like that. However, it was limited in the amount of accounts it could connect to simultaneously (I believe one per protocol, but that was long ago).

For gaim, it could reduce clutter for some users, but not for others, that would end up looking like those 80's computer rooms :)

Maybe it should be something "on demand", like one "view status" icon, that would display account status in a new window (perhaps using your visual indicators idea as a visual aid). The main icon would change if there was a connection problem with one of the accounts. I believe that's what the users are most interested into.

We could also try one icon per protocol, not account. The icon would change if there was a state mismatch between two accounts on the same protocol, or display the account status if there was only one for that protocol.

All,

One thought could be to display a summary of the connection status for all currently defined accounts.  We could have a green light for all connected, red for all not connected, and yellow for some being connected, and some not.  That way, we can get an overall status indicator of our status quickly.  Of course, red/yellow/green are just examples.

I like being able to see what accounts I have logged in and what status they are all in at a glance. The main item of clutter for me is the textboxes for entering/viewing statuses. I like that it is possible to change status/edit there, but when the editing is done it would look better if the account status message was displayed exactly as it would be for a buddy (ie. in small text under the account name).
