When I run make I get

fermin@newton:~/Descargas/pidgin-latex$ make
Package pidgin was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `pidgin.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'pidgin' found

make: *** [LaTeX.o] Error 1

The error message in spanish says "The file or directory does not exist". What can I do to get it to install?

I forgot to say I'm using Pidgin 2.9.0 (libpurple 2.9.0) in Ubuntu 11.04 32 bit.

It looks like you haven't got the pidgin-dev package installed. After you installed it the compiling should complete. If that doesn't work there's a Debian package containing pidgin-latex which should be compatible with Ubuntu and as far as i know there are plans to port it to Ubuntu, don't know if that happened yet. So if there is a pidgin-latex package in your Package Manager install that instead, if not you can still download the Debian package from packages.debian.org
