I noticed this in the Windows version when I was trying
to get a friend to use encrypted IM. After initially
installing the client, the user starts up gaim and gets
the login screen, where they can enter, say, their AIM
name and password and log in.
However, this doesn't get entered into the "Accounts"
window, so when they go to enable encryption, no key is
created for their currently-signed-in account. Then
when they click on "encrypt" or receive an encrypted
message: segfault, crash.
The obvious workaround is to be sure to tell my friends
to set up an account in the "Accounts" menu before
logging in, but this wasn't obvious to my non-tech
friends ... it was just crashing when they tried to use
