Hello, I have added this few line to the psl developers documentation. It talks a bit about translating phpSlash to new languages. Since it's so short (and simple) I'll just post the whole thing here so that other users know how to translate phpslash to their own languages. Once you are done with the translation, please gzip the file and email it to either Joe or me (Luis). ============================== Translation files Files located in the "include/locale" directory are called by the function pslgetText to translate strings contained in the code to the chosen language. Procedure for translating to new languages: In the "locale" directory, copy the file en.php to LANG.php, where LANG is the desired language. Change the values of the array to the new translated language. i.e. A key value like, "This is English" => "This is English", will be changed to: "This is English" => "This is LANG". ============================== I think that's clear enough (and very simple to follow). If anybody has ideas on how to improve this (say more), please feel free to reply to this post. ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator LatinoMixed.com le...@ho... '<!-- END $filename -->'; I also think that turning the comments on/off would be very useful. I guess it's a matter of being something that is configured within template.inc or passed to template.inc from slashTemplate.class (and probably set in the config.ini.php file).. I'm not sure how you'd make it configurable without something like: function loadfile($varname, $showComments=true) { or perhaps another global variable. I do think the comments should be there by default, but would be awfully nice if they could be turned off in a live site. Hello, Presently Back-End.org is using template.inc as is and adding in template header/footer comments with each template just as phpSlash and (and most other phplib template driven apps likely do). In talking to the Back-end.org team though, it seems like the following modification to template.inc would make it easier for us to ensure that the file names are accurate and easily accessible. cvs diff phplib/php/template.inc Index: phplib/php/template.inc =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/back-end/back-end0.7.x/class/phplib/php/template.inc,v retrieving revision 1.1.1.1 diff -r1.1.1.1 template.inc 909c909,911 < --- > > $str = "<!-- START $filename -->' . $str . '<!-- END $filename -->'; > If we implement this we'll have a lot of header/footer comments to delete and I'd just like to try to keep this in step with phpSlash if we can. I'd also like to contribute the following javascript which can just be inserted into a block to easily identify which templates are where. <script type="text/javascript"> <!-- // Code Contributed by Lasse Nielsen - http://www.infimum.dk function convert(node) { if (!node) {node = document.body;} switch (node.nodeType) { case Node.COMMENT_NODE: var text = node.nodeValue; if (text.substr(0,7)==" START ") { var newNode = createNewNode(text.substr(7)); node.parentNode.replaceChild(newNode,node); } break case Node.ELEMENT_NODE: for (var i=0;i<node.childNodes.length;i++) { convert(node.childNodes[i]); } break; default: break; } } function createNewNode(text) { var a = document.createElement("a"); a.href = "/admin/BE_editTemplateAdmin.php?submit=edit&file="+escape(text); var img = document.createElement("img"); img.src = "/images/BE/buttons/spacer.gif"; a.appendChild(img); return a; } --> </script> <input type="button" value="Convert!" onclick="convert()"> Mike -- Mike Gifford, OpenConcept Consulting Free Software for Social Change -> http://www.openconcept.ca Stop Cdn Pension Plan War Investments -> http://coat.openconcept.ca/ Another world is not only possible, she is on her way -Arundhati Roy |

Hello, I haven't checked this yet in psl8, but in psl7 there is a unique value for which is assigned to anything which you would want to assign comments to (stories & polls at the moment I believe). Hopefully there will be more swapable modules between BE & PSL in the future and I was wondering what folks would think of an node id to be used to identify all objects. It's an idea that Evan has brought up on the BE dev list while looking at drupal. Do folks think that this might be useful? I don't know why I forgot about this (in Back-End's config.php file): // If slashSess appears in the url, and cookies are working, // you can set the php_admin_flag session.use_trans_sid off // in php.ini or virtual host / directory or .htaccess // The following works for PHP 4.1.2, does not work in 4.3+, others? ini_set('session.use_trans_sid', 0); I guess this should be part of our default install.. arg.. Mike, Just a guess...but it is a combination of (underlying) native sessions and the session.use_trans_sid configuration directive? --Matt http://www.php.net/session On Dec 14, 2003, at 9:21 PM, Mike Gifford wrote: > Hello, > > I'm still having trouble trying to figure out how to control when > slashSess variables are inserted into the URL.. Hello, I'm still having trouble trying to figure out how to control when slashSess variables are inserted into the URL.. It seems quite arbitrary to me. Sometimes a site I've installed Back-End on will pop up with slashSession variables and other times it won't.. Occasionally they will be there when I first browse to a site, but not after I login. I'm a bit frustrated now as I was trying to get htdig to index: http://www.learningpartnership.org/ Should be no problem, except that htdig is viewing the page with slashSess variables in the URL and in watching the indexing process, it seems that htdig is loosing the slashSession variable from time to time, so has re-indexed the site a few times I think. slashSession pops up when it can't store a cookie, right? I guess that would make sense with search engines, but for security reasons it should be very, very rare that I'd see the session variable anywhere (certainly htdig shouldn't be indexing it).. Any ideas on how to set up a PSL type site so it is consistently without slashSession variables? Or have we messed up something in Back-End somewhere down the line? Just wondering if it would make sense to revise format_mail() to take advantage of php4's functionality - moving from: function format_mail($str, $char_len, $scrub) { //BEGIN FUNCTION if ($scrub) { //Open if Scrub $str = stripslashes($str); // lh: Hopefully this is the short replacement $str = eregi_replace('<(/?)(a|b|br|i|p)+[^>]*>', "", $str); $str = eregi_replace("\n|\r|[[:space:]]+|10|13|&#....;", " ", $str); $str = stripslashes($str); } //Close if Scrub while(strlen($str) != 0) { //Open While if (strlen($str) > $char_len) { $len = strrpos(substr($str, 0, $char_len - 1), " "); } else { $len = 0; } // in case of no spaces if(!$len) { $len = $char_len - 1; } $str_out .= substr($str, 0, $len) . "\n"; $str = ltrim(substr($str, $len, strlen($str))); } //End While return $str_out; To: function format_mail($str, $char_len=76, $scrub=false) { if ($scrub) { $str = strip_tags($str); } $str_out = wordwrap($str, $char_len, "\n", true); return $str_out; } The current version seems to let some tags through (eg <table> or <div> - is that deliberate?) There must be some subtelty I'm missing? Peter |

The module is called phpslash-dev, and you can get it from: http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=10566 The anonymous CVS is fine for now. You can just go into the include directory and look for the locale stuff. The getext implementation we are using is pretty straight forward: "key"=>"value" Where Key is actually a string and Value is the same thing (for the en.php file). For the rest of the files, Key will be the english string and Value is whatever other language. Example: en.php: "Hello World" => "Hello World" es.php: "Hello World" => "Hola Mundo" You might want to take a close look to what's missing from the current .es.php file. Blame me for all the bad translations in that file; i tried my best to use "modern" definitions for words that are originally English and for which I have no idea how to say in any other language ;-) In other words, I do all my online surfing in either English (primarily) or French (go figure)(I guess because I'm exposed to Spanish daily, so I don't worry much about practicing it). Anyway, I hope this was not too basic for you ;-) But, it will help other people who might want to help with other languages, especially those for which we have no translators yet. Please note that those locale files cover most of the strings for phpslash-dev, but there are still some strings lurking somewhere. We will get to those and add them to the en.php file so that translators can get their hands on them and update the other *.php files. Thanks in advance for your help! If you need more help, don't hesitate in writing to the php...@li... mailing list. If you are not a member of that list, you might want to become one since the majority of the discussions go through that list first -- that way you will get first hand news on upcoming releases. Oh, almost forgot, when done with the es.php file, just send it back to me as a .gz or whatever so that I can commit it to the CVS repository (or Joe for that matter). >----- Original Message ----- >From: "Luis M" <le...@ho...> >To: <ari...@us...>; <joe...@us...> >Cc: <php...@li...> >Sent: Monday, December 08, 2003 7:13 PM >Subject: RE: phpSlash translators > > > > > > >hi. im a spanish native speaker, my english is very good, > > > > > >let me know if u want help with your translations. > > > > > >Eng-Spa > > > > > >Spa-Eng > > > > > >take care > > > > > >Gaspar Macari > > > > > >ga...@ca... > > > > > > Excellent! > > > > I have been doing the translations for Spanish - English, but I'm >getting > > more and more involved in debugging and coding, so, it will definitely >help > > if I can pass on the translating part to somebody else. > > > > Joe, what's the procedure on this? I have been doing the translations for Spanish - English, but I'm getting more and more involved in debugging and coding, so, it will definitely help if I can pass on the translating part to somebody else. Joe, what's the procedure on this? Should Gaspar submit patches to us? As of now I know I have not look into the new strings in a while. I found a missing string in the French/Spanish files the other day (Group Admin). So, I know there are strings that still need to be translated. And there will be more to come. I guess it's all a matter of Joe's blessings and you are the person for Spanish translations. ;-) ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator LatinoMixed.com le...@ho... Hello, I posted a problem to the BE development list and I believe I have now found the solution to this problem (after posting this). I'm hoping that it might get integrated into PSL (so I'm posting it to the PSL dev list too) I was looking for ideas on how to make the images in the html block in the default install of BE here show up properly: http://www.opensourcecms.com/back-end/ I was trying to add {IMAGEDIR} to this block so I could add sample html that could easily install in a sub-directory (or the root directory) of a site. What I realized is that part of the problem was that the html blocks were being updated in places other than the admin screen. Then it occurred to me that the only place that should be updating the html block should be the admin screen so my problem was simplified by adding a check I added a check for the html type to BE_Block.class's function storeParsed. If something other than the admin function attempts to update the cache of the html block it will return empty (which should save a db call on every html block which is parsed while visiting the site). There needed to be a check to convert the admin DATA to html entities so that it would be visible and editable, so I added the code to convert ('{', '}', '"', '<', '>') to ('{', '}', '"', '<', '>'). Finally, there was some conversion to allow. The cached data to be displayed properly on the page with the proper conversions str_replace is quite resource efficient and this shouldn't be a significantly enhanced load for the db to handle. It could also be expanded to allow other template variables to be added as block options. I'd like to get feedback on this to see if there are problems adding it to the BE code and possibility Mike [mike@office be7]$ cvs diff class/BE_Block.class class/BE_Block_admin.class class/Block_render_html.class Index: class/BE_Block.class =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/back-end/back-end0.7.x/class/BE_Block.class,v retrieving revision 1.3 diff -r1.3 BE_Block.class 636c636,641 < --- > > // html blocks don't need to have their cache refreshed > if ($this->block_info['type_id'] == 1) { > return false; > } > Index: class/BE_Block_admin.class =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/back-end/back-end0.7.x/class/BE_Block_admin.class,v retrieving revision 1.3 diff -r1.3 BE_Block_admin.class 229c229,240 < --- > > if ($this->block_info['type_id'] == 1) { > // Allow for template variables to be edited > $cacheData = str_replace(array('{', '}', '"', '<', '>'), array('{', '}', '"', '<', '>'), $this->block_info['cache_data']); > > } else { > $cacheData = $this->block_info['cache_data']; > } > 233c244 < 'BLOCK_TITLE' => $this->block_info["title"], --- > 'BLOCK_TITLE' => $this->block_info["title"], 237c248 < 'CACHE_DATA' => $this->block_info["cache_data"], --- > 'CACHE_DATA' => $cacheData, Index: class/Block_render_html.class =================================================================== RCS file: /cvsroot/back-end/back-end0.7.x/class/Block_render_html.class,v retrieving revision 1.2 diff -r1.2 Block_render_html.class 26,43c26,43 < < $this->output = $block_info["cache_data"]; < return 1; < < /* < $sl_q = pslNew("slashDB"); < $query = "SELECT cache_data < FROM psl_block < WHERE id = " . $block_info["id"]; < $sl_q->query($query); < if ($sl_q->next_record()) { < $this->output = $sl_q->f("cache_data"); < return 1; < } else { < return 0; < } < unset($db); < */ --- > > if ($_PSL['phpself'] == '/admin/blockAdmin.php') { > > // Return unmodified cache_data for edit mode > > $this->output = $block_info['cache_data']; > > } else { > > global $_PSL; > > // Parse critical template variables > $templateVariables = array('{ROOTDIR}', '{ROOTURL}', '{ABSOLUTEURL}', '{IMAGEDIR}', '{IMAGEURL}'); > $publicValues = array($_PSL['rootdir'], $_PSL['rootdir'], $_PSL['absoluteurl'], $_PSL['imageurl'], $_PSL['imageurl'], ); > $cleanedHTML = str_replace($templateVariables, $publicValues, $block_info['cache_data']); > $this->output = $cleanedHTML; > > } -- Mike Gifford, OpenConcept Consulting Free Software for Social Change -> http://www.openconcept.ca Stop Cdn Pension Plan War Investments -> http://coat.openconcept.ca/ Another world is not only possible, she is on her way -Arundhati Roy |

I'm trying to reuse as much code (for different sites using phpslash on the same server) as possible. The "include" directory is prime target for this (sharing). I guess that php4 keeps the session files unique and organize and we don't have to worry much about different sites keeping different sessions in the same directory. >Here is the sf.net doc: > ><http://sourceforge.net/docman/display_doc.php?docid=14267&group_id=1#webphpsession> > > > What do you think? > > > >I've been thinking about supplying an example htaccess file with these >type entries commented. Maybe even a couple example mod_rewrite rules. IMHO htaccess involves having root in a given server (or being able to modify the webserver configuration somehow) for those servers that don't allow it by default (I think sf does or at least I got a 500 error when I try to do that). In general, the code that's in config.php does the trick without needing an htaccess, and it's possible more portable between platforms (for those who dare to use phpslash on other platforms). I guess that you could include that for as long as there is an option to do the same things from config.php. The mod_rewrite rules are welcome though -- we need examples in that area. ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator LatinoMixed.com le...@ho... Works perfectly fine now. Thanks Joe. A couple of plus things that I can see that work fine now: when switching languages, the languages actually change regardless of whether the page was cached or not! Great improvement over the previous phpslash version. Before if you went to the page with, say, French as your default language, and then try to switch to another language (say close your browser and re-open it) then you will still get whatever the last cached version was... Which was really odd. Did this get fixed or my caching is not working properly? Note that I changed the .ini.php file to use "internal" cache instead of "static". I don't think people would like to use "static" cache by default since that would require an extra step to get things working (allowing the user who run the httpd server to write to the root directory of the web site -- very bad idea). Here is a list of very incosistent things I have found so far... (just so I don't forget them) Blocks: a. page public slashHead-htmlarea3. There is no such file for e/a theme. Another way to include the javascript code found here should be found so that one can include a simple line in slashHead that points to this needed inclussions. b. page-admin skin basic. This is wrong. the skin should be left alone. Especially since skins inherit from a parent. all skins should inherit from "basic" or allow multiple inheritance as discussed before. Either by: 1. allowing multiple lines in skin.ini or 2. that a skin inherit from a parent and the parent of that, etc..., recursively. For example: skin.ini skin.parent="clean" skin.parent... skin.parent... skin.parent="basic" So that files are looked for in a top-to-bottom fashion wherever is found and ultimately use "basic" if not found. c. topicphpslash.gif in template files. This and the phpslash logo should be rename to generic strings like "site-logo.gif" "site-logo-small.gif". That way people would just have to rename their logos with this generic names without having to find/replace strings in all skin templates. I will post more of these as soon as I find more... still digging why I'm getting the login screen to recur so many times before accepting my login/password as valid (100% sure I'm typing the right thing e/a time). And why when using certain languages one gets to see titles like: Page - admin - module, Page - public - nav - top, etc..., in e/a section of the page. Talk about frustration. ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator LatinoMixed.com le...@ho... Sorry, for the meantime, I added "fr" to the templates directory (a symlink to "en") -- I needed this badly. You can use "es" to test the bug I reported -- see below. ----)(----- Luis Mondesi System Administrator LatinoMixed.com le...@ho... Wow, and I thought that the bugs problems were taken cared off... i just realize that if I go to a .8 based site with my browser set to a language other than whatever is set in config.ini.php for the given site, then one sees a totally different site with messages showing in e/a header... Note that this is a default instalation of phpslash with unmodified "themes" directory. i.e. there is a single directory "en" which has all themes and the theme defaults to "clean". Go here for an example: http://v2divx.sf.net If your browser is set to English, then you will see the right page. Other languages (at least French) show a different version.
