I would like to see an xml or soap-ish interface to
mysql provided by phpmyadmin. It would then allow
desktop applications to be written which could control
mysql over http.

Why should somebody want to write a desktop application for
accessing MySQL over HTTP if he could use the native MySQL
    protocol for that?

Our HTTP method has too many limitations and I don't see why
we should propagate using it for desktop applications by
implementing an XML interface in phpMyAdmin. In fact, it
would just be a bad copy of the MySQL protocol.

Because 99% of web hosts that give you phpmyadmin don't give
you access to the native MySQL protocol. You just get
    phpmyadmin.

Now I quite like myphpadmin, but it can get tedious
sometimes if you are doing a lot of development, and it's
the only interface to the database you have.

I don't thing such feature has anything to do with
phpMyAdmin. It should be completely separated project, as it
does somethign completely different. btw: isn't
http://be4gle.sourceforge.net/ what you are looking for?
(Don't know it at all, just searched freshmeat for MySQL and
    soap).
