Not sure what determines the display order, but it isn't the order in the Raw Gedcom. Could it be? Can some dragNdrop display be used to re-order the raw gedcom contents?

The answer depends on where you record your media items, as well as which page you are viewing them from.

If they are attached to a dated event, they display within that event. If there is more than one for the same event, the are in the order they appear in the GEDCOM.

On the Album tab, within each "Type" row they are in alpahbetical order based on the title. There is an attempt being made to allow drag'n'drop for this page I believe - but it's not easy, as need to be stored somewhere.

The Media tab is more complex. I think its individual items first (alphabetical by file name), then family items (also alphabetical by file name). Personally I find it pointless having this page AND the Album page, so don't display this at all (thats an option in the Album page config).

The media manager page has its own order, as does the Multimedia List.

Its complicated... You might also find it useful trawling through some of the older discussions on this subject in both Tracker and Forum pages here. I don't think anyone has ever come up with a workable solution that fits everyone's needs.

I know this has been a bone of contention for some time, and am working on a GUI drag and drop interface.
This will require a new element for the indi Gedcom ( 1 _PGV_OBJS @Mxxx@ ). All Album tab and Media tab media sorting will be based on the order of these elements if they exist. These elements will be automatically created the first time you use the GUI sorting fearure for an individual. You will also have the ability to "reset" or remove these elements for each individual if needed to go back to the original sort order.
I plan to tackle the Album tab/ Media tab only, because, as kiwi_pgv correctly says, other media areas are based upon event sorting etc etc.
The media manager and multimedia list pages I have no plans for at the moment.

Something obviously changed in the latter versions, I used to be able to go into the raw GEDCOM and reorder the media items (usually census images) on a FAM page and they would then display in order. Now it doesn't look at the raw GEDCOM order, nor does it alpha sort ("1920_NY_...." will still display before "1910_NY_..." if I add the 1920 first.

    Birchy,

I agree, trying to sort the media items ONLY on the Family page, by manually gedcom editing the media items, does give some weird results. Even if you change nothing on the edit gedcom popup, but still save, it will change the order again.
If the sort order here is important to eveyone, I may consider using the element "1 _PGV_OBJS @Mxxx@" here as well, but remember there are event sorted items (with media associated) here as well as level 1 media items on their own, so it is not as simple as one might think.

I am concentrating on the indi page order for the Album Tab and the Media tab ONLY for now, anywhere else will have to come much later OK.

    Is this fair enough?
