I have cookies enabled on my brouwser (tried both ie and firefox on windows and firefox in Linux) get an error message stating that cookies are not enabled, hence unable to log in at all.

Most likely this is a configuration error. This is a common problem.
Cookies are set by domain and path.
You may have set SERVER_URL/LOGIN_URL in your config.php file.
If you log-in to http://domain.com/phpGedView, you won't be logged in on

I was indeed using a url forwarding setup. My domain is forwarded to a dyndns.org url since I do not have a static IP.
Once I updated the config file to have the dyndns url instead of my own domain name it worked.
Maybe this could have been better explained somewhere for newbies like me. but I am all set now.
PS: is there any way to have multiple alternatives (direct url as well as dyndns) both configured?

Not without a code change. It is done that way deliberately. Otherwise when you have several installations on the same site, e.g.
then a login to one would log in to the others.
