i have a record that is using the _AKA fact. i'm trying to put in just the different first name that this person was known by but, when i click on save, it is getting the /'s automatically added to it. this editing is being done by using the "Options for Individual" menu on the "Personal Facts and Details" tab... EDIT->Edit Name...

if this field is only a single word, it should not be /'ed...

eg:
1 NAME Mary /Kemp/
2 GIVN Mary
2 SURN Kemp
2 _AKA /Polly/

the last entry is the one i'm on about... if this field type requires a surname in addition to the given name(s), it should say so in the help section ;)

If Mary Kemp was known as Polly, then presumably Polly was her nickname, and you should use

    1 NAME Mary /Kemp/
    2 GIVN Mary
    2 SURN Kemp
    2 NICK Polly

AKA is intended for alternative full names, which usually have a surname, e.g.

    1 NAME Elton Hercules /JOHN/
    2 _AKA Reginald Kenneth /DWIGHT/

thanks for that... sadly, though, i cannot help what "outside" gedcoms have in them... especially when working with a huge gedcom such as i have that have been built for 10+ years and incorporates many numerous gedcoms into it...

could we have things, such as this, fixed during the importation routine? this would also go pretty much hand in hand with another problem, that of no default country specified, that i have seen more times than i care to count... the "fix" for the default country would be to inquire of a default country and then stuff in, as the last place of the PLAC record, the defined country much the same was as the googlemap addon asks for default country but doesn't appear to use it :(

FWIW: i don't know if i have stated this, but all of my work is with the CORE distribution and no mods/addons. the ONLY mod/addon i have is the googlemaps one and i have moved those addon files out of the install tree to disable it until i get all the work on the PLAC entries done as it slows down the system quite majorly... once all the PLAC work is done, then i plan to move the googlemap addon files back in place and see what happens. on that note, i'll also state that i have imported ALL of the places that come with the googlemap addon... all except hungary, IIRC, which was stored in a ZIP file instead of being open in the HUN directory ;) yes, i created one huge CSV text file and manually ran the import stuffs to get all those places into the database ;) yes2, i am my own system administrator ;)

apologies for mixing multiple interface "bugs/flaws" but it just seemed to fit in the "conversation" O:)

<<apologies for mixing multiple interface "bugs/flaws" but it just seemed to fit in the "conversation">>

Bug reports with lots of unrelated issues tend to get ignored.

<<could we have things, such as this, fixed during the importation routine?>>

I'm trying to move away from that. The "create married names on import" logic has been removed, and replaced with a plugin in the "batch update" module. I'm not 100% sure what you are asking, but it would seem to fit in to this category.

Can I suggest you close this "bug" report, and raise one or more feature requests.
