Is there a way to disable checking for the latest version feature? I want to make this product available to a wider audience and don't want to centrally manage the version. If currently not posible it would be a nice feature for a future release.

Thank you for a great product.

    Hi,

PasswordSafe doesn't automatically check for new versions. The only check is manually, via Help->About. If you want to disable this, then you should build your own version. If you wish, I can create a custom version for you for a very reasonable fee. Contact me directly (ronys at users dot sourceforge dot net) for more details.

      Hi Rony,

Why not an automatic “Version check”, which can be turned off in Settings,
      if that is somebodies preference?

      Best regard,

      Björn

Mainly because people get nervous about a program that contains sensitive information contacting the internet automatically.
Perhaps a trade-off would be to have PasswordSafe optionally check for updates when started, but before the database is opened by the user. This would be in addition, not instead, of the current manual check.

      Hi Rony!

      That sounds fair to me.

But, it would be enjoying if one get a question about checking version every
      time PasswordSafe is opened.

Let´s say, if you get the question once every day, week, month or never (up
to you to choose in Settings), I would appreciate the feature. That is
      before opening the database.

This works very well with other programs and will also indirectly promote
your program on the market. It´s service to the people.

I was thinking about this. I like the idea of not having PasswordSafe reach out to the internet. In fact if it conatined no code that made and http or any socket connection that would be good.

However we should all keep things up to date. So how about a separate process/executable that does the checking? It could run at startup, perform the check, and terminate. Sure it could have an option to not check or only check once a day/week/month. However the Start Menu could have an icon "PasswordSafe Update Check" to do a check immediately and this would not require closing the database. Or people could add a scheduled task, following a documented process.

I appreciate this is more effort but it is a cleaner solution, keeping pwsafe.exe nice a "pure" and connection free, whilst allowing people to configure update checking if they wish or turn it off! The installer could not install the update checker for example, depending on chosen options.

This seems to be a nice compromise, although I appreciate it is possible a bit more work.
