Ubuntu 12.04 password safe 0.91

While writing some tickets, I had pwsafe and it's builtin help open (to try out some stuff in parallel, to read the help).

Didn't use it for a while, so I think something automatically closed the pw db.

That's ok, BUT: you can't close the help or main program window any more afterwards, it just hangs. UI is completely unresponsive in both windows.

killall worked. :D

Discussion

  • i am the only one having this? it's making me feel a bit uncomfortable to have to kill it that way, esp. considering the precious data passwordsafe handles...

  • You're not alone. I'm running v0.91 beta on Debian Jessie with the same behavior. If I leave the application open for more than a minute or two it hangs, and utilizes one of my CPU cores at >90% utilization. This makes the application almost totally unusable. Like you, I have to kill it and restart it. In theory, there is a setting that I believe is set by default to save the database immediately after any changes, but still, the application is pretty unusable as it is.

The discussion "Autotype hangs PasswordSafe database box" discussed this a year ago, and summarised it as "The problem can be more easily described as PasswordSafe hangs at the normal Lock time, or after Autotype has been attempted. Autotype never works". This thread has quite a lot of useful background on what we're experiencing, but it seems that Thomas Waldmann is the first to open a bug report for this.

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 12.04LTS I've experienced both the "autotype not working" and the unusability when the "safe lock timer" has kicked in. I've tried pwsafe 0.8, 0.9 & 0.91 on 12.04LTS and all have the same issues. I've also tried these pwsafe versions on Linux Mint 13, with the same results.

  • Looks like 0.92BETA fixed it for me. Thanks!

Hm. I can guess (post facto) what the root cause was - same as the cause of [bugs:#1112]
