Hello,

I use the pam_mount module. If I connect a cable(Well, when there isn't any network connect everything is ok), which isn't in the network where the samba shares are, the login takes much time and after that I've got the following errors:

[ 468.724061] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation
[ 468.724076] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -110
[ 846.732060] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation
[ 846.732075] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -110
[ 1224.740053] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation
[ 1224.740067] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -110
[ 1607.048109] CIFS VFS: Error connecting to socket. Aborting operation
[ 1607.048125] CIFS VFS: cifs_mount failed w/return code = -110

Is there a chance to speed up the login process?

Best regards,
Jan-Hendrik Meyer

    So what should pam_mount do?
Otherwise, for CIFS, you would have to talk to the samba.org people.

  • Perhaps the time for the attempt could be restricted to 5 second. Or there could be a possibility to detect if host xy is available? (Or a detection in what subnet I am)
Otherwise if this is not possible, you are right, there should be an approach to restrict the time for cifs mounts globally.

pam_mount deals with mounting, not figuring out whether the network is functional or not. I guess even mount.cifs has a hard time, given that delaying is part of the TCP operation.

You could ask the samba people to add a timeout option to mount.cifs to set the timeout to the desired value. Then you can specify it in the pam_mount config. Or you write a script yourself that does the host checking and use it in the pam_mount config instead of /sbin/mount.cifs.
