Ther could be a way to bypass autoclear setting in the kanji lookup. For example, if I tap over a kanji, then clear the pad, but if I hold over the kanji, then show the coloring code for the strokes.

Alternatively, you could show the coloring as long as you hold down the pen on the kanji and then auto-clear when you release (assuming your point was that holding the pen should disable auto-clear completely for that tap).
