Work on Avanti MiroLCS version 1.0 continues apace. After nearly 2 years in
the making it is still tentatively expected to be completed and released in
late Fall 2002. Two of the three main components - OPAC and cataloging -
are now functionally complete. Development work has now shifted to the
circulation component, which is well underway. The manual and other
documentation is also being written in parallel with the development of the
Avanti MicroLCS version 1.0 will work as a simple, robust and fully
functional library system deployable in a small library. But it represents
the beginning of something new. Although simple, it will form the basis of
a universal library computing system, something much more general than a
traditional integrated library system. Its design is a significant
departure in many ways. Rather than designing the system around the needs
of a particular library or type of library and around prevailing standards,
the core of Avanti MicroLCS is built around a simple abstract model that
captures essential and universal principles of a library computing system.
This gives it a flexibility not found in most other systems, both open
source and commercial. Great care has also been taken in designing a user
interface that is easy to learn, with a general flexible layout that is
consistent across all components of the system.
No code is being released at this time. Because Avanti MicroLCS is
something different, it is important that it be presented in a complete,
coherent, well documented, and readily usable form. What is in development
now goes far beyond the last public release, version 0.4, including much of
the documentation on the website. The website quite frankly hasn't kept up.
However, as the system approaches completion I plan to make available one or
two pre-release versions. Select parts of the manual in progress will also
be made available for perusal on the project website in the near future.
In the mean time, a reasonably recent running demo of the basic OPAC search
client is available on the project website to try out (the database is still
small though)! To try the demo and for more information, visit

Congratulations Peter. I'm really in awe of you sitting down and doing
this on your own. Best of luck in getting a rock solid release out the
