Hi Mark, I'm posting this to the list in case others are interested, but if you want to get more specific, then we can continue off list, too. Like many libraries, we provide access to electronic indexes and journals through a home grown web database: http://www.lib.siu.edu/cgi-bin/encore2/articles Our reasons are: 1. Need to have easy, flexible ways to proxy serve the right patrons (institution affiliated and out of network) 2. Don't want to/don't have current resources to enter records for aggregator titles into the OPAC that link to title-specific URLs a. keeping the title lists and dates of coverage updated for vendors that change lists a lot b. compromising rigorous cataloging with the need for speed in the fast-changing world of e-journals c. we are in a consortium that shares a statewide catalog which makes things trickier 3. I find our OPAC display for electronic serials to be cumbersome and non-intuitive. Users just want to link in and get there. a. Need an OPAC that can be customized differently depending on the type of record. b. Basically, for a journal title, I want all my options shown to me on one screen: location and dates of coverage for print, for microfilm, for Vendor X, for Vendor Y, and for Vendor Z.
