First off, let me introduce myself. My name is Gareth Hughes, and I am one of the primary developers on the Mesa and DRI projects. I now work at NVIDIA, and am currently working on improving performance of the NVIDIA Linux driver, particularly on the P4. I wanted to let people know that I'm going to get oprofile up and running on the P4, so if others have done/are planning on looking at this, or if people have advice in general, I'd love to hear from you. I plan on getting started this weekend, and will keep the list aprised of my progress. Before I go, a general word of thanks for all the work you guys have done on this project so far! It's a great tool, and I hope to make it even better. -- Gareth |

Merging the Athlon support has given some of the needed infrastructure for the multiple counters for eg. > or if people have advice in general, I'd love to hear from you. Cool, both John and myself can frequently be found on irc.openprojects.net in #oprofile (or #kernelnewbies if things are quiet) if you need to talk about any of this. > Before I go, a general word of thanks for all the work you guys have > done on this project so far! Yes, hopefully the io-apic is very near and need only one minor adjustement but the perf counter are so different than we must take care on how to expose it to oprof_start / op_start. At my eyes the P6/K7 pc interface look like a high-level interface compared to the P4 core pc. > > or if people have advice in general, I'd love to hear from you. Have you an idea on how you want to expose the hardware to the high level stuff (eg. in term of starting the profiler from op_start or oprof_start) ? phil |

At my eyes the P6/K7 pc interface look like a > high-level interface compared to the P4 core pc. yes, but the basic mode of operation is similar(ish), with the exception of PEBS. So I think initial patches supporting the "standard" oprofile method shouldn't be too difficult - capturing the perfctr setup stuff is as you say probably the hardest part. I've only skim-read the docs at this point. PEBS stuff can come later. regards john -- "Please crack down on the Chinaman's friends and Hitler's commander. I'm still working through the current codebase, so I'm still learning how it all fits together. > Have you an idea on how you want to expose the hardware to the high level > stuff (eg. in term of starting the profiler from op_start or oprof_start) ? I'll need to get more familiar with oprofile before I'll know the best way to handle the P4. Still early days yet, but I'll keep the list up to date with my progress :-) -- Gareth |
