Initial Comment:
Compliing OProfile on Gentoo amd64 with GCC
4.1.0-beta20060120 gives the following error:

I can work around the problem by putting -fpermissive
in my CXXFLAGS.  Putting it in my CFLAGS causes the
configure script to fail, however.  (-fpermissive
doesn't belong in CFLAGS anyway, but that's still weird.)

This sounds like a problem that was addressed in December
2005 for Fedora Core 4. There is a patch in the development
oprofile and the Fedora Core 4. I have attached the FC4
patch to this bug entry.
