Are you running 32-bit or 64-bit? IIRC, Red Hat disabled some APIC functionality on uniprocessor x86 kernels, because it caused problems with some laptops. You can verify this by looking at the kernel config: grep APIC /boot/config-* If you are running a 64-bit kernel, then I don't know, perhaps it is the same issue.
