Yes the kernel in the original post is old, which is version 2.6.18.

But my Debian system is relatively new (the testing branch), and
the kernel is new, too (version 3.1.0).  I cannot get the expected
files on this system yet.

Your distribution is very old. Perhaps try a newer on.
Really noone on Linux development lists is usually still interested
in debugging ancient kernels like this.
