Linux Ubuntu 13.10 3.11-0-14-generic #21-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 on VMware Player (Host: Win 7 Pro)
CPU: Inter(R) Core(TM) i5-2540M CPU @ 2.60Ghz

Installed latest git master:

apt-get install libpopt-dev
apt-get install binutils-dev

git clone http://sourceforge.net/p/oprofile/oprofile/ci/master/tree
cd oprofile

./autogen.sh && ./configure && make && make install

Then it fails when starting daemon:

opcontrol --init
opcontrol --setup --separate=lib,kernel,thread --no-vmlinux
opcontrol --start-daemon

Cannot find event CPU_CLK_UNHALTED
Using default event: CPU_CLK_UNHALTED:1000000:0:1:1
Cannot find event CPU_CLK_UNHALTED

Am I doing something wrong or Oprofile is not supposed to run on a VMWare?

  • As the FAQs on the oprofile website states, "OProfile can't work with VMware when using performance counter interface. A workaround is to use RTC mode (2.4 kernel) or timer interrupt mode (2.6+ kernel)." Do 'opcontrol --deinit' and 'rm /root/.oprofile/daemonrc'. Then, when you do 'opcontrol --init', it should initialize timer mode profiling and you can just start oprofile. Do not try to set it up to profile on any native event.
