Milky Way may look weird on some 3Dfx cards. AFAIK this is a hardware fault when dealing with large polygons located far away from the camera.
You can try another method for drawing the milky way (and the stars too...)
1- Clear your zbuffer
2- Disable Zbuf writes & read
3- Setup the matrices to reflec the right point of view without translations. (your are a the center of the world)
4- Draw the milky way, and then the stars, and then the names of the stars as if they were spotted on the surface of a unity sphere whose center is the center of the world.
5- Enable read/write on the zbuffer
6- Continue to draw the others object as you usualy do. This will resolve the problem with "very far polygons" on most cards I think.
