Open Software Project to Green Our Cities

Alex Miller has begun an open source project to encourage the use of public transportation in our cities.

Specifically, his project is to develop a file standard for transit gps data, and to develop the distribution software. The model for the distribution is the bind/dns model ensuring that central servers never be overwhelmed with data requests.

Once the gps data is made publicly available from internet servers then open source or commercial applications can be developed to provide real-time transit information, enabling anyone with a cell phone to decide if they should wait for the next bus or get some coffee.... read more
