Problem solved. I found an old printout of a BlueZ FAQ and realised that the
script in /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf for pin helper was wrong. I set it up as
In /etc/bluetooth/hcid.conf ...
Created a script called /etc/bluetooth/echo_pin containing the following ...
echo "PIN:`cat /etc/bluetooth/pin`"
and now everything works fine.
