If coupled to a controlled and then to input devices (light glasses, binaural beat generation, cranial micro eletrical stimulation) brain states can be guided (and the user learn self guidance). Such bio-feedback loops have been shown to be beneficial for sleep, focussed concentration and, of course, self learning (introspection). This is just one use, another is perhaps as an input device for computer functions (ie moving mouse pointer by controlled blink of left eye/right eye, etc). It's also a big jumping point for all things unthought in the field of bio-computer interface ;) I am by no means an expert however...
